Inigo
Jones is a very special place, possibly the last surviving example of a
fully operational Slateworks in North Wales.
Established in 1861, the workshop is a thriving local business, supplying
slate
products all over the world.
See craftsmen using age old skills and working machinery. Watch as they
cut, shape and polish slate slabs into products such as cills, coping,
flooring, steps kitchen worktops, hearths and various craft items.
You can also watch as nameplates, plaques and memorials are either hand or
machine engraved or shot blasted.
We have a superb Slatecraft Showroom where you can see a wide range of
very high quality slateware, ideal for gifts or keepsakes. Send a s.a.e.
for a mail order catalogue on slate nameplates and slatecraft.
Our Self Guided Tour starts with a video
presentation on how slate is mined, before it is delivered to our works.
A taped commentary then lets you wander at your own pace through the
workshops. You can see the machines in
action and the craftsmen at work.
Our
Historical exhibition gives an interesting insight into the development of
the slate industry and of Inigo Jones in particular.
Educational Lettercutting and Calligraphy exhibitions also form part
of the tour. Why not have a go at calligraphy or try engraving slate in
our Lettercutting studio? Children can compete in our quiz to win a slate
prize.
